A mental health care plan (MHCP) is a document created by your GP or psychiatrist that outlines your mental health needs and the support required to manage them. It gives you access to Medicare-subsidised appointments with mental health professionals, including psychologists, under the Medicare Better Access initiative.
How Does a Mental Health Care Plan Work?
Consult with Your GP: To get started, book an appointment with your GP. They will assess your mental health, discuss your concerns, and determine if you are eligible for a mental health care plan.
Create the Plan: If appropriate, your GP will create a mental health care plan that is suited to your needs. This plan includes a provisional diagnosis, treatment goals, and recommended mental health services (e.g., seeing a psychologist).
Access Medicare Rebates: With the plan, you can access up to 10 individual therapy sessions per calendar year with a Medicare rebate. This includes services provided by psychologists, occupational therapists, or social workers.
What Does the Medicare Better Access Initiative Cover?
The Medicare Better Access initiative provides rebates for mental health services, making therapy more affordable. It covers:
Psychological services: Individual therapy sessions with a registered psychologist, clinical psychologist, social worker, or occupational therapist.
Group therapy: Access to group therapy sessions, with rebates available for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
Extended Access: If your GP or specialist deems it necessary, you may be eligible for additional sessions beyond the initial 10, particularly if your difficulties require ongoing treatment (e.g., eating disorders).
Who is Eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan?
Anyone experiencing mental health challenges, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or stress, may be eligible for a mental health care plan. It’s designed to provide affordable access to mental health services, particularly for those who may not otherwise be able to afford private therapy.
How Do I Get a Mental Health Care Plan?
Book an appointment with your GP.
Discuss your mental health concerns openly.
Receive a referral: Your GP will refer you to a mental health professional, and you'll receive Medicare rebates for your therapy sessions.
