What is a Mental Health Care Plan?
September 19, 2024
Many Australians struggle to access mental health support due to cost barriers. A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) can help make therapy more affordable through Medicare rebates. This guide explains everything you need to know about accessing mental health support through Medicare.
What is a Mental Health Care Plan?
A Mental Health Care Plan is a Medicare-supported program that helps you access professional mental health services at a reduced cost. Your GP (or psychiatrist) creates this structured plan to support your mental health needs, and connect you with appropriate mental health professionals.
Getting Started: Three Simple Steps
Book a GP appointment: Schedule a longer appointment (around 30 minutes) with your GP to discuss your mental health concerns.
Have an assessment: Your GP will assess your needs and, if appropriate, create a personalised care plan.
Begin accessing services: Once your plan is in place, you can start booking appointments with mental health professionals, including psychologists, to receive Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
Medicare Rebates: What You'll Get Back
Current rebates (as of 2024) vary depending on the professional you see:
Clinical psychologists: $141.85 per session
Registered psychologists: $96.65 per session
Occupational therapists and social workers: Varying rebates apply
Note: Most practitioners charge above these amounts, leaving you with an out-of-pocket cost. Always discuss fees before booking.
